  2. The current Swift client for the Real-time database is written in Objective-C with a Swift overlay.
In order to allow using Firebase from Swift across different platforms like Windows and Linux, it would be awesome with a native Swift version. Alternatively a Swift version bridged directly from the firebase-cpp-sdk using the new Swift C++ interoperability.

I did a port of the Objective-C code to Swift as an experiment, and I have it running on Linux just fine - together with the Auth-rewrite in Swift.

The (very experimental) PR is here: https://github.com/firebase/firebase-ios-sdk/pull/8670

  3. Swift has recently gained direct interoperability with C++.

This would allow the current bridging layer written in Objective-C++ to be removed, which would in turn make it possible to use Firestore from Swift cross platform.

The Browser Company have created patches for firebase-cpp-sdk to allow this:

    https://github.com/thebrowsercompany/swift-firebase

It could also decrease the maintenance burden by removing the bridging layer code.

  4. As of now, there is no way we can set a custom expiration time for the Email Signin with link authentication. Our use case is that we generate this link through admin sdk and then mail the users (as an invite).

Hence, it becomes really important for us to have a custom expiration time.

  7. There needs to be a way in the Firebase SDK to pass the server information to the client cache without incurring another read (like you do with Firebase Admin SDK) using the load bundle functions.

This will save reads, save money, and be faster.

  9. The automatic custom schema migrations are great, but when managing an API expressed almost explicitly by the schema, there needs to be a clear dev story of how to migrate the database schema yourself, and move data in custom ways, while still allowing the exposed api to be backwards compatible. This can be very challenging with automatic migrations.

  11. It's really nice to see Remote Config to come to the servers.

For us it would be crucial to be able to use conditions in Remote Config on the server as well.

Specifically we are looking at targeting by user properties (these could maybe be loaded and passed by us during evaluation).

    e.g. serverTemplate.evaluate({userProperties: { .. } })

  12. The default behavior when listening to a document/query is that you will always get an initial invoke of your listener.
Allowing to change this behavior would give more freedom, in the case that the developer wishes to fetch the initial values asynchronously and then have the changes delivered via the callback.

  14. We sometimes want to target all countries or languages apart from a select few with things we are delivering through remote config. Currently to do this we have to select all other countries and languages and then make sure the one we don't want to serve to is unticked.

Instead it would be much easier to just target the language we don't want to send it to.

  15. Right now, there are two levels of pre-defined roles: "Viewer" and "Admin".

However, sometimes you don't need all of the Admin permissions, but you still need to make some changes in the system as normal operations.
This has been already done for App Check but not other products.

    Cloud Firestore:

Let's take the Firestore roles as an example:

    • Cloud Datastore Viewer (A generic Firestore viewer permission)
    • Cloud Datastore User (A service account for manipulating data in the Firestore databases)
    • Cloud Datastore Owner (A generic Firestore owner permission).

And then, there are specialized roles with viewer/admin level access for certain types…

  17. Currently you can only add blocking functions for User signup and User sign in. I want to be able to add a Blocking function for User Reset password.

This way I can customize password requirements at the API level and implement features in Cloud functions + Firestore such as preventing previous password reuse.

I would have used Cloud Functions + Firestore for my Blocking function, but because this feature didn't exist I ultimately decided to move my auth password checks to my AWS hosted backend API.

  19. I am using cloud run to and firebase hosting to have a custom domain to access my application.

I know Firebase doc mentions :
Firebase Hosting is subject to a 60-second request timeout. If your app requires more than 60 seconds to run, you'll receive an HTTPS status code 504 (request timeout).

But I need to increase this timeout, since my cloud run app has a function to process data and write to an excel that can take up to 3mn.

  20. Afaik there is currently no standard way to a) document the structure and organization of Firestore collections and documents stored in a project expected by apps which use it, and b) share the model definition across languages and platforms. Instead, each client requires its own implementation of the app-specific model and conversion to/from Firestore's model which needs to be kept up-to-date as the system involves.

If there were a way to share this model (for ex. proto, JSON schema, other) and easily use it from Firestore APIs, it would reduce dev and maintenance cost and improve developer experience.
